Top Reasons to Leave HVAC to the Professionals
There’s no shortage of online resources and do it yourself (DIY) YouTube videos for just about everything under the sun. If you don’t know, just YouTube it right? Um, wrong. When it comes to fixing your HVAC system yourself, err on the side of – DON’T. We understand it’s tough to resist the urge to save money and dive into a DIY HVAC repair, but here are the top reasons you should leave it to the professionals.
1. Refrigerant regulations
If your system is acting up because of a refrigerant issue, you’re not even allowed to buy refrigerant, let alone handle it. Only contractors and HVAC technicians with a valid EPA 608 certification are authorized to buy refrigerant.
2. You could void your warranty
A lot of units are covered by a warranty. But if a certified technician is not doing the repairs or servicing your unit, it could render your warranty null and void. And that could cost you a whole lot more in the long run.
3. What if you’ve diagnosed it incorrectly
It’s 98 degrees and your AC stops working. You YouTube it and think you’ve got it figured out. You order the part and sweat it out for the 2 days it takes to get to you. It doesn’t fix the problem. You can’t really complain to YouTube. Getting a qualified professional out to accurately assess your system is going to be the quickest path to fixing your problem. And – they will usually already have the parts needed to get you up and running again in stock.
4. You fixed one issue but didn’t see the next one coming
Part of the reason you should be doing routine maintenance is to head off any major issues before they happen. If you happen to fix an issue yourself but didn’t notice the larger one looming because you are not an actual HVAC professional, you could be DIYing yourself into a much larger bill down the road.
5. Inexperience can lead to injuries
Maybe you thought you turned off the right breaker. But if you didn’t, the electricity your system runs off of is no joke and can cause serious injury or death. Why risk it? It will be safer and faster to call in the professionals.
Just like you wouldn’t ask a brain surgeon to fix your car, or your barber to do brain surgery, there are some things that should just be left to the trained, experienced professionals who specialize in them.
