Winter is one of the busiest times of the year for your HVAC system. As a residential and commercial HVAC expert, we recommend taking this opportunity to save energy this winter and reduce your energy bills, of which there are many ways to do so. You can use a programmable thermostat, get new ENERGY STAR® certified equipment, air seal your home, and more. Advent Air Conditioning explains more in today’s post.
HVAC Experts Give Tips on Saving Money This Winter
One of the most effective ways to reduce waste heat from your HVAC system is by using a programmable thermostat. This device can reduce your interior heat at a specific time when you are away from home. By the time you get back, it will have already increased the heat, making the device convenient. If your current commercial and residential HVAC system is more than a decade old and requires regular repairs, then investing in ENERGY STAR®-qualified products can be a good idea.
Upgrading to a new HVAC system is a good and effective long-term plan to bring down heating costs and make your home more comfortable. You can also try ENERGY STAR-certified replacement windows and doors if your current ones are outdated and drafty.
Speaking of drafts, air sealing and insulating your home makes a big impact for relatively little effort. Since hot air will no longer leak out of your home, your HVAC system will consume less energy to keep you comfortable. You can also try adjusting your blinds or curtains depending on the time of day; close them at night to protect against drafts and open them in the day to let sunlight warm your interior.
Light-emitting diodes or LEDs last up to 25 times longer than ordinary incandescent lights and they are at least 75 percent more efficient. This makes LEDs an excellent choice for your lighting systems. You can also save energy by making sure that the lights in your home are turned off when you don’t need them. Motion sensor and timer controls can make this easier. If you are away from your home, you can save money by setting your water heater to the lowest setting.
In addition, we also suggest unplugging electronics if you are away from your home for an extended period of time. Some electronics use energy as long as they are plugged in. To make turning off your electronics simpler, consider using a powerstrip. Plug multiple appliances in the power strip and then turn all these devices off by just flipping a switch.
