Air Conditioner Running

My Air Conditioner Won’t Stop Running – What can I do?

Summer is finally here, which means that you will probably find yourself using your air conditioner more often. If you start to notice that the AC runs continuously or it is constantly cycling on and off, there may be an issue with your HVAC system. Understanding the common problems that can cause your air conditioner can run continuously is the first step to diagnosing and fixing the issues.

Why does my air conditioner keep running?

If your air conditioner is running constantly in order to keep your home comfortable, this can be due to a number of issues with your HVAC unit:

  1. The system’s evaporator coil is dirty.

Did you forget your spring HVAC tune-up? If so, your AC may be running because the evaporator coil is covered in dirt or debris. This impacts the cooling process, making your unit work harder than it should to keep your home comfortable. If you suspect this may be the case, make an appointment for an HVAC system tune-up, and one of our technicians will clean and inspect your system.

  1. Your air filter is clogged.

If you don’t remember the last time that you replaced or cleaned your air filter, this may be the culprit. A clogged or dirty air filter will restrict air flow, which makes it difficult for your system to remove humidity and keep the air cool. This causes your system to continue running in order to make up for it. If you replace your AC filter and are still having issues, be sure to call an AC repair technician as it may be a more serious problem.

  1. Your thermostat is broken.

Another common issue that can cause your AC to run constantly is a broken thermostat. When your thermostat isn’t working properly, the HVAC system doesn’t know when to turn off even if your home is already the right temperature. Use a thermometer to check to make sure that your thermostat reads the correct temperature. If you find that it does not, then you may need to replace your thermostat.

  1. You’ve got leaky air ducts.

Another reason your AC may be running constantly is due to air leaks in your home. If you have an older home with older air ducts, there’s a good chance that there may be areas of your ducts that allow cool air to escape. The more air that escapes, the harder your air conditioning system has to work to keep your space comfortable. Seal any air leaks around your home’s doors and windows and check to make sure your insulation is adequate.
